Presentation:

2000 years of history told by the maps and the names of the 1460 plots of the Grands Vignobles de Bourgogne. Meursault, Clos de Vougeot, Chevalier-Montrachet, Le Corton, Vosne-Romanée, Les Perrières, Les Amoureuses, Etournelies,... All these names of prestigious crus that appear on the labels of bottles of Burgundy wine have a charm, a mystery, a strangeness that make those who discover them the desire to know more! These are names of crus, but above all of villages, climats and localities that were given a long time ago. Their origin and their significance allow to better know the history and the ways of life of the men who, for more than 2000 years, lived in Burgundy and contributed, by their work and their understanding of the places, to shape this land and to make it an exceptional vineyard.

This Book is composed of two different and complementary parts. In the first part, are presented the wine maps of all the climats and localities of the 34 communes of the great wines of Burgundy: The Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. They are accompanied by the list of climats and localities classified by appellation: Communal, Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, the surface area of each, the color of the wine produced and the names of the winegrowers who operate the Grands Crus.
In the second part, are explained for the first time, in a clear and lively style, the origin and meaning of each of the 1460 names of climats and localities. The fragmentation of the Burgundy vineyard into as many plots is one of its originalities. Each plot has its characteristics, its identity, its history, its name which makes it different from other plots. And it is to this infinite diversity that this book testifies. In Burgundy, when we talk about the climate, "we don't raise our eyes to the sky, we lower them to the earth", says Bernard Pivot nicely.
