Presentation :
From prehistory to the present day, 15,000 years of adventure. Grain beer is humanity's oldest common drink. It was born at the end of the Upper Paleolithic, 15,000 years ago, a “food” then as precious as bread. Ancient beers compete with wine; they do not have the prestige but allow just as much communication with the gods. Han China and Mayan America experienced a golden age of this fermented drink.
The Germanic peoples carried out a revolution when they learned to hop their cervoises: by becoming transportable and storable, they traveled and completed their conquest of the world. Belgium is reinventing its abbey beers and making them world bestsellers. At the end of the 20th century, the renaissance of craft beer makers, first in the United States and then throughout the world, gave credentials to this beverage, now called craft beer.
Today, in France, two or three “artisanal” breweries are created every week. There are now tens of thousands of local beers, alongside the well-known brands of powerful multinationals. After The Incredible History of Wine and The Incredible History of Cuisine, author Benoist Simmat completes his successful trilogy. He is accompanied in drawing by a new generation illustrator: Lucas Landais.
The duo tells us the thousand-year-old saga of this major drink in 200 informed and humorous pages.
