Presentation:

Birth of the Vine and Wine, Patrick McGovern's book published in English under the title The Ancient Wine, is considered the major text in this field. It recounts the spectacular and fascinating adventure of wine since the dawn of civilization, more than 7,000 years ago, and demonstrates its essential role since the dawn of time in the art of refined living, praised by both poet and scientist.

Patrick McGovern takes us on an astonishing journey back to the time of the first experiments in making this famous beverage in the earliest villages of the Middle East. Even before the rise of civilization, he imagines our hominid ancestors enjoying a "Paleolithic Beaujolais Nouveau". As he travels back in time, describing the first wines of Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Holy Land, he creates a new synthesis of the centrality of wine in human history, replete with insights from modern archaeology, science and the arts. He tells how wine soothed and healed the bodies of weary beings, fired the imagination of artists, enlivened celebrations of all kinds, accompanied kings and burghers into the afterlife, and even became the symbolic embodiment of life itself.
