Presentation :

Inaugurated as part of the UNESCO Chair “Culture and Traditions of Wine”, the Rencontres du Clos-Vougeot have the major objective of understanding wine as a cultural product, a vector of civilization, whose informed consumption is a true art of living and a philosophy linked to conviviality and sharing, humanist values if there ever were one.
These fifth Clos Vougeot Meetings target the theme “Vines, wines: games and challenges of diversity”. Since the domestication of the vine and the choice of hermaphroditic species in the Neolithic, the number of cultivated individuals has continued to increase and human selection actions have led to a very large and remarkable range of grape varieties and of cultivated varieties, a diversity nourished, until today, by history, exchanges, diffusions, various flows…
What is the situation today with this faceted diversity of vines and wine? We have now become aware that “biodiversity in the vineyard” and “biodiversity of the vineyard” are threatened by centuries of vitivinicultural practices too focused on productivism and that certain vineyard landscapes, too, are in danger. New behaviors are emerging to restore the natural and cultural diversity of vines and wine, but the road is still long and the challenges are immeasurable, as the numerous international specialists gathered for these 2011 Meetings attempt to show.
