Presentation:

Inaugurated as part of the UNESCO Chair “Culture and Traditions of Wine”, the Rencontres du Clos-Vougeot have the major objective of understanding wine as a cultural product, a vector of civilization, whose informed consumption is a true art of living and a philosophy linked to conviviality and sharing, humanist values if there ever were one. Dedicated in 2009 to the theme: “Landscapes and wine heritage”, these third Meetings brought together international specialists who sought, through the great diversity of the world's vineyards, the common thread of landscapes and wine heritage. They showed the double filiation of the landscape, born both from the riches and constraints of the physical environment (relief, soil, climate, etc.) and from the inventiveness of men, in particular winegrowers who have built terroirs and landscapes, sometimes in extreme natural conditions which excluded any other cultivation than that of the vine. They also underlined that the landscape is never fixed, that it transforms according to social, economic or environmental developments and, as such, it can be threatened with disappearing: it must therefore, like the built heritage and technique of the wine-growing regions, be safeguarded and managed while respecting its identity and its richness.
