Presentation :

Inaugurated within the framework of the UNESCO Chair “Culture and Traditions of Wine” at the University of Burgundy, the Rencontres du Clos-Vougeot have the major objective of understanding wine as a cultural product, a vector of civilization, of which informed consumption depends a true art of living and a philosophy linked to conviviality and sharing, humanist values if there ever were one.

These eighth Clos Vougeot Meetings target the theme “Wine heritage, old vineyards, new vineyards”. Around thirty international speakers spoke of the links forged by men of wine during their long conquest of the earth. The “historical longevity” of cultivated vines, vitis vinifera L. , originally coming from wild vines, owes nothing to chance but is the result of the desire, the will, the stubbornness of men. Over the millennia, from generation to generation, they have managed to evolve and enrich the common knowledge and heritage of vines and wine. If the progressive mutation of plant material, the transformation of vine management methods, like the modifications in winemaking techniques result from these transgenerational links, the heritage is multifaceted.

The transmission of wine estates or cellars, the prescription of taste, the diffusion of wine rites and ways of drinking it are all examples of the passing of the baton which shapes the realities of today's wine world. The reconstitution of historic vineyards, like the creation of new vineyards all over the world, demonstrate the cultural significance of vines and wine, but also the importance of the economic issues of this expansion, also favored by climate change and globalization. .
